How to Spread the Joy of Reading

Whether I am training beginning teachers or delivering a keynote address for corporate executives, attendees inevitably tap me on the shoulder afterwards in private and confess about troubles they are having with getting their children to read. So what’s the secret?

There are manuals given to navigate your DVR, build an Ikea chair or pass a driving test, but parents are often left to fend for themselves without any guidance.

Here are some simple steps to help your child love reading:

  1. Provide lots of access to interesting reading materials. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink. The same can be said with kids and reading. In order to get a kid interested, though, you need to make sure the kid has something to drink. Quench your children’s thirst with plenty of high-interest reading materials – from books to comics, magazines to newspapers.

  2. Read in front of your children. Kids aren’t stupid. If they don’t see us reading, they’ll never read.

  3. Read with your children. The single best way to encourage your children to read is to read aloud to them. Read aloud to your children as often as possible.

Being a parent is not easy, but there are easy ways to help spread the joy of reading to your children.
